AIRetc… Samantha Dick
Over the last 5 months as Artist In Residence (AIRetc…) in the Art & Design Team Samantha Dick has made significant impact and having successfully gained a role as part-time Learning Assistant it seems likely that impression will be last well beyond their tenure as AIR… Samantha started with us in September 2019 and within days was giving an excellent talk on her journey through Edinburgh College as a students and on to Glasgow School of Art to HND Contemporary Practice.
It wasnt long before Samantha was working very closely with the CAP team and students by joining tutorials and group crits offering great advice and support to everyone. It wasnt long before they were maticulously planning a series of workshop examining “The Body as Material” through which the participants and Samantha explored the potential of their own phyisicality as well as that of the spaces and circumstances they were in.
The second of the 3 workshops took place at our partner organisation in Newhaven at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) (see above) and the works developed by the participants was presented at North Edinburgh Arts Centre (NEA) our partners in Muirhouse. (see below) For most of the participants it was their first experience of performative artwork and for Samantha it was their first experience of developing and delivering a workshop of this kind yet the standard of the work was very high indeed and testiment to the quality of the workshops and the confidence developed by Samantha’s approach.
Many people would take time to relax and take stock after such an intensive set of workshops and outcome but for Samantha it was time to capaitalise on the experience and the confidence and energy it gave by immediately starting work on new work for their first solo exbition at the recently opened hubCAP Gallery at Edinburgh College.
It has been an absolute pleasure to have Samantha Dick as our first AIRetc… of the 2019 – 20 academic session.
hubCAP Gallery Opens
Edinburgh’s newest artist run space opens at Edinburgh College Granton Campus.
Developed as a core element of our new Professional Practice and Exhibition programme on the HND Contemporary Art Practice Course we were delighted to launch hubCAP Gallery with an exhibition of 2D work by all the current participants of the course.
The launch was a fantastic success and and was well attended by freinds, family, students and colleagues from across the college but in particular it was fantastic to see so many of the CAPalumni family coming from as far afeild as Dundee, Galashiels, Bathgate and Glasgow.
hubCAP is the first in a series of initiatives in development that will provide CAP students with real world experiences that will enable them to gain key knowledge and skills to identify and progress in their developing area of contemporary art practice and beyond. Additional initiatives will include campus based opportunities including; a lecturer shadowing / metoring programme, library placements with the Art & Design Subject Specialist and art journalism / marketing along with external placement opportunities with our external partners.
The gallery adopts a model of Artist Run spaces and is organised and facilitated by a selected committee of current HND CAP students who will develop and deliver a programme of exhibitions by emerging and early career artists and complimented by a and events and workshops programme.
Pigrock Bothy Project – Day 1
As we start our second week in residence at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Arts Pig Rock Bothy you can catch up on what has happened so far on the CAP2 Pig Rock Bothy Project Blog!
In the morning we had a tour of the gallery with curator Dan Brown.
Looking at the ‘Now’ exhibitions which included the work of Monster Chetwynd, Monya Flannigan, Henry Coombes, Betye Saar and Wael Shawky.
Monster Chetwynd is the main focal point of the exhibition which included pieces of work in response to the galleries archives collection.
And the other 4 artists connect to the exhibition through challenging the convention in the way they have produced their pieces.
I’m the afternoon we were given the task to write both a descriptive piece of writing about a chosen an artwork as well as a personal reaction, describing why we were drawn to the piece of work and collecting information from the wall description.

#2D Practice: Screen Printing Workshop
Yesterday was our first screen print workshop in some time. It has been a while but the new bigger space means we can get our screens and squeegees out again. Thanks to print supremo Kirstie Burn for all her expert help. We will post up some of the results soon!
