It was an enormous pleasure to welcome Shareen Sorour as the new Artist In Residence in the Art & Design Dept. Shareen studied Foundation Diploma (FAD) and HND Contemporary Art Practice (CAP) before heading west to study for a degree in Sculpture and Environmental Art (SEA) at Glasgow School of Art (GSA).
So far Shareen introduced us to her practice and has already taken part in crits and tutorials.
From final assessments, end of year exhibitions and alumni degree shows, late May / early June is a hectic time in CAPetc… land and this year has been no exception. Anyway more of our 2019 graduating artists in our next post but for now lets have a look at our amazing alumni and their fantastic degree shows.
As you might know we have been offline for a while and there is a lot to catch up on, so much as we’d like to, there is little time to do an in depth review of the degree shows so please click on all the links below including the artists names for more info on the individuals practice. There are also links to press reviews and the official degree show pages.
It was great to see the varied and fantastic work by Jek McAllister, Elena Cheltsova, Dulcie McConville and Cloud Tanadynska who all graduated from CAPetc… in 2016 along with surprise visitor Freya May now studying anthropology at the University of Edinburgh.
On Friday it was over to Glasgow and former home of Stow Further Education College where this years Glasgow School of Art degree shows were the first occupants of the newly acquired and refurbished building. Only one 2016 graduate to see among the multiple floors of exhibitions but a great one it was by Samantha Dick
The good folks at the White Pube have published an interview with #CAPalumni Rachel Golden Simpson and her dad on collaboration / co-creation / participation.
Rachael graduated from CAPetc… in 2013 where she began her familial collaboration which continued during her degree studies in Glasgow School of Art’s Sculpture & Environmental Art Dept.

A massive thank you to #CAPetcAlumni Natasha Kemp, Karen Fleming, Natalie Doyle and Lynne McBride from the Reunification Collective for giving such an inspirational talk at their exhibition ETC…at Gayfield Creative Spaces. CAP1&2 colleagues were given great insight into what lies ahead for them in the coming years of developing as artists, getting used to crits and presentations, applying for art school, what to expect when they get there and the realities of life afterward.
All four artists have made fantastic starts to their careers and are involved with a great range of projects with highly respected art organisations and companies. Natasha who graduated from the painting school at ECAis working from her new studio in Dunfermline and is represented by a London based gallery. Karen also a painting graduate of ECA is working closely with the company behind Ocean Terminalto develop studio and gallery space as part of a new creative hub at the terminal site. Natalie a GSA environmental art graduate is currently at Stills Gallery and working on a new body of work and finally Lynne graduated from DJCAD fine art has recently taken up a key role on the committee of Generator Projects in Dundee and is working at Dundee Contemporary Arts. Over the last few years we have been developing a successful relationship with the Sculpture & Environmental Art (SEA) dept at Glasgow School of Art. There are a lot of #exCAPers currently studying across years 2,3 & 4 and several have graduated from SEA in recent years. Last year Jennie and I spent a day in dept discussing applications, progression, course structures and participating in Year 2 crits which was a fantastic opportunity for us to benchmark the courses and establish closer ties.
Last week we returned along with 5 current CAP2 students who have applied to GSA SEA for next year. In the morning we took part in Year 2 project tutorials which included Subie and Shareen who graduated from CAP last year.
After lunch we went to 695 Gallery which is within the site of the 3rd Year Public Art Project. The students including #exCAPer Heather Lane, were hanging their exhibition and we were able to discuss some of the projects and find out more about the 3rd year course.
Finally we went with Heather and Elizabeth, our fantastic host, to the Savoy shopping centre to see G-Unit a fantastic public engagement project /programme by another #exCAPer, Rachel Simpson and her collaborative partner Hannan Jones. During the project G-Unit is running a series of workshops including screenings and book binding / production.
It was a fantastic day and great so see and hear how well all our former CAP colleagues are getting on at GSA and we look forward to seeing how their work continues to progress.
