AIRetc… Samantha Dick
Over the last 5 months as Artist In Residence (AIRetc…) in the Art & Design Team Samantha Dick has made significant impact and having successfully gained a role as part-time Learning Assistant it seems likely that impression will be last well beyond their tenure as AIR… Samantha started with us in September 2019 and within days was giving an excellent talk on her journey through Edinburgh College as a students and on to Glasgow School of Art to HND Contemporary Practice.
It wasnt long before Samantha was working very closely with the CAP team and students by joining tutorials and group crits offering great advice and support to everyone. It wasnt long before they were maticulously planning a series of workshop examining “The Body as Material” through which the participants and Samantha explored the potential of their own phyisicality as well as that of the spaces and circumstances they were in.
The second of the 3 workshops took place at our partner organisation in Newhaven at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) (see above) and the works developed by the participants was presented at North Edinburgh Arts Centre (NEA) our partners in Muirhouse. (see below) For most of the participants it was their first experience of performative artwork and for Samantha it was their first experience of developing and delivering a workshop of this kind yet the standard of the work was very high indeed and testiment to the quality of the workshops and the confidence developed by Samantha’s approach.
Many people would take time to relax and take stock after such an intensive set of workshops and outcome but for Samantha it was time to capaitalise on the experience and the confidence and energy it gave by immediately starting work on new work for their first solo exbition at the recently opened hubCAP Gallery at Edinburgh College.
It has been an absolute pleasure to have Samantha Dick as our first AIRetc… of the 2019 – 20 academic session.
Bothy Residency at SNGMA
In late September #CAPetcY2 undertook a 5 day residency in the Pig Rock Bothy at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Located within the grounds of the gallery Pig Rock Bothy is the 3rd of 3 residency spaces developed and produced as part of the ongoing Bothy Project. Having the opportunity to develop and produce work in such a prestigious location was daunting for all of us but despite what felt like significant pressure to make productive use of the space a decision was made to take creative risks and adopt a fluid and responsive approach to the residency.
A loose skeletal plan was developed by staff for each of the 5 days with each day beginning and ending with a group discussion around the table in the bothy. This allowed for the days activities to be developed collaboratively and for reflection of the days events. It was quickly established that the source for the weeks work would be the location, context and content of the gallery. The resources provided were purposely limited and basic in order to reflect the residency experience the bothy will offer when relocated thus stretching the participants to produce innovative and creative responses. Throughout the week a variety of group and individual responses were made to exhibits in the gallery including, sculpture, drawing, photographs, creative writing, installation and performance.
On day 5 the residency culminated with a full day of installations, performances and presentations developed over the week all of which were open to the public. The particular highlight for all the participants was the performances made in response to the works in the galleries by Charles Avery, Graham Fagen, Roderick Buchanan, Lucy McKenzie and Ross Sinclair which were performed live in an around the works often to the delighted surprise of the public who believing they were in a particularly busy room of fellow contemporary art enthusiasts found themselves in the middle of a live performances examining the nature of art and our relationships with it.

AV Festival 2008
The 2008 AV festival opened last week with a gala event featuring performances of John Cages’ Variations VII and Yokomono by Staalplaat Soundsystem.
AV Festival is an international festival of electronic arts featuring visual art, music and moving image. A biennial event, the festival takes place in Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Middlesbrough in the North East of England. It consists of concerts and performances, exhibitions, film screenings, seminars, symposia, workshops and other special events at many venues across the three urban centres of the North East.
AV Festival 08 has the theme of Broadcast and runs from 28 February – 8 March 2008 in venues across the North East.
