Visiting Artists: Dean Hughes

Students and staff at ContemporaryArtETC.com would like to thank Dean Hughes for providing an insight into his practice as a contemporary artist. Dean presented and discussed a range of work dating from his early years at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 1993 right up to his most recent body of work which was recently acquired by the Saatchi Gallery.

Dean utalises the language and media of the every day to bring fresh perspective to our often unnoticed daily routines. From the re-embroidery of London bus seats through the re-hydration of waterless puddles to the re-interpretation of the fundamentals of the pre-paperless office using A4 paper, hole punch and staplers he quietly and skillfully intervenes into pre-existing givens.

Dean will be returning to Edinburgh’s Telford College in the new year in his capacity as head of the Intermedia dept at Edinburgh College of Art to talk to HN CAP students about the Intermedia degree programme.

Friday was the second in our current series of artists talks. The students and the team would like to thank Jonathan Owen who gave an informative insight into his practice over the last 10 years.

Originally from Liverpool Jonathan studied Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University before moving to Edinburgh where he graduated from Edinburgh College of Art’s Master of Fine Art program.

Economy is very important within his work, reducing his subject and examining essential qualities, which at the same time as focusing his intent expand the possible meaning for the viewer. In recent work Jonathan develops questions around his own pre-occupation of suburbia and notions of class.

Jonathan is currently showing at Doggerfisher, Edinburgh along with Claire Barclay, Sara Barker, Neil Clements, Sally Osborn, Jonathan Owen and Albrecht Schäfer

Exhibition runs until 26th April 2008.

Louisa Preston @ ESW

pavillion-esw.jpg louisa-preston.jpg

Louisa Preston envisages ideals, which exist in our constant manipulation of our surrounding urban environment and domestic spaces, our constant rearranging, modification and demolition making way for the latest new builds, and how these attempts at idealism leave the old and new in constant fluctuation and tension, the past and present in indeterminate flux.

Louisa is currently working at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop making a new installation reflecting this sense of instability and unrest; over the timeframe of the show she will rework, reconstruct and remake an installation at the pavilion space of ESW in correspondence to the present surrounding environment and its historical roots. Documentation of the work in progress, updated daily on the ESW website.
